165     23. PCRE was behaving differently from Perl in the way it recognized POSIX
166     character classes. PCRE was not treating the sequence [:...:] as a
167     character class unless the ... were all letters. Perl, however, seems to
168     allow any characters between [: and :], though of course it rejects as
169     unknown any "names" that contain non-letters, because all the known class
170     names consist only of letters. Thus, Perl gives an error for [[:1234:]],
171     for example, whereas PCRE did not - it did not recognize a POSIX character
172     class. This seemed a bit dangerous, so the code has been changed to be
173     closer to Perl. The behaviour is not identical to Perl, because PCRE will
174     diagnose an unknown class for, for example, [[:l\ower:]] where Perl will
175     treat it as [[:lower:]]. However, PCRE does now give "unknown" errors where
176     Perl does, and where it didn't before.

294     expense of backing off one optimization in certain circumstances. Normally,
295     when pcre_exec() would call its internal match() function recursively and
296     immediately return the result unconditionally, it uses a "tail recursion"
297     feature to save stack. However, when a subpattern that can match an empty
298     string has an unlimited repetition quantifier, it no longer makes this
299     optimization. That gives it a stack frame in which to save the data for
300     checking that an empty string has been matched. Previously this was taken
301     from the 1000-entry workspace that had been reserved. So now there is no
302     explicit limit, but more stack is used.

305     syntax that is required for Windows, and which was going wrong for the

311     limits. As the maximum quantifier is 65535, the maximum group length was

314     are longer than 30,000 bytes (though not repeat them that many times).
315     Change 7.0/17 (the refactoring of the way the pattern size is computed) has
316     made it possible to implement the integer overflow checks in a much more
317     dynamic way, which I have now done. The artificial limitation on group
318     length has been removed - we now have only the limit on the total length of
319     the compiled pattern, which depends on the LINK_SIZE setting.

753     easier. A side effect of this work is that the limit of 200 on the nesting

756     runs more slowly than before (30% or more, depending on the pattern). I
757     hope this isn't a big issue. There is no effect on runtime performance.
